Overview
Asphyxia is a 7-minute-9-second live-electronics work for baritone and Max/MSP. It reflects the composer's experience of contracting Covid-19: consciousness gradually blurring through headaches, fever, and difficulty breathing, while parallel versions of the self seemed to intertwine. Live improvisation between voice and electronics attempts to reconstruct the figure of a patient from fragmented memories.
Sound design
The work exists in audio and video versions that originate from the same Max patch. Granulation, grain chorus, four-tap delay, and chaotic synthesis shape the unstable space between voice and memory.
